10 steps to improving as a tennis player

Tennis is a very intricate and challenging sport. Many aspiring tennis players fail to take the time to understand the sport. Tennis is not just about hitting tennis balls every day and hoping that you will improve. It takes well planned steps to achieve success.

1. Be open to learning

As obvious as that sounds, most tennis players are focused more on results and being comfortable instead of focusing on what will get them the results. Most cases meaning you will have to get out of your comfort zone.

2. Set clear goals

Be sure to write down your goals. Don't hesitate to stretch your goal. What is possible and what you think is possible can be easily misinterpreted. Don't be afraid to take risks. Ask the right questions and you will get the right answers.

3. Watch a lot of tennis

Whether it's on TV or watching your friends or peers play it is significantly valuable. Being able to experience the game from a different perspective helps you realize more of what is really happening while you are on the tennis court. Most of the time a player is on the tennis court, there are a lot of feelings involved which can distort judgment. Watching video of yourself can also be very helpful.

4. Schedule practice matches against opponents who give you the most trouble.Playing better players is not the only way to get better. It is actually easier to play against better players. The necessary skills are developed the most when you are challenged and outside of your comfort zone.

5. Set daily challenges

Every time you step on the tennis court, gym or lesson, work on doing better than the last time. Don't allow yourself to get distracted by mistakes, opponents, equipment and conditions.

6. Believe in yourself and your coach

This is probably the most important point. Trust in what your coach is saying and doing. If you have doubts, make sure you communicate this with your coach so they can clear it up. Remember they have a reason and they have most likely been in your situation. Make use of your coach's expertise.

7. Have fun

Another important point. Remember why you started playing in the first place. The more fun you have the less distracted you will be and you will be able to make better decisions while competing.

8. Allow yourself to improve.Be patient. Expectation can hinder your progress and disrupt your confidence. The coach will monitor your progress so ask them how you are doing and they can push you harder or slow you down if necessary.

9. Pen and notebook

Always have a pen and notebook in your tennis bag. You will not remember everything your coach tells you; if you are serious about getting better and reaching a high level, this is the way to do it. The tougher the level the more information you have to remember.

10. Preparation

Prepare for the worst and make the best happen. If you prepare for everything, namely equipment issues, opponents, weather, fitness, whatever you can think of, it will give your mind less to worry about and the opportunity to focus on the task at hand.

Club Hours

The club is open 7 days a week. From 7 am to 10.30 pm.  

The club requires 24 hour notice of cancellation or full payment is due. Clinic groups and matches are formed according to ability and age. We ask that you please respect the pro’s evaluation in matching you with other players. Proper tennis attire is required on court. Shoes must have non-marking soles. The club reserves the right to dismiss without refund anyone whose conduct is detrimental to the enjoyment of the other players. There is one make-up clinic allowed per session. There are no carryovers to the next season.


Liability Waiver: By signing the club agreement, you acknowledge that you or your child are physically fit to participate in any program and further agree that all exercise and use of all facilities shall be undertaken by his or her sole risk. You agree that JKST, Inc. shall not be liable for claims, demands, injuries, damages or suits of any nature for injuries or his or her property arising out of or resulting from use of the services and/or facilities of JKST, Inc.


Loss Waiver: I agree that the Club is not responsible for damage to or loss of my or my child’s personal property while at the Club premises or damage to or loss of my motor vehicle while parked on the Club’s lot.
